The old West Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville West Virginia operated from 1876 until 1995. The building was constructed using convict labor and the stone used in its' construction was hand quarried from local sandstone. The walls are 5 to 6 feet thick and 24 foot high. The building was designed to resemble a Gothic castle.
The prison was the scene of numerous riots, some fires, a tuberculosis outbreak and numerous inmate suicides and 36 homicides. There state carried out 94 executions, nine of which were by electric chair with the rest by hanging. These events have left the prison with plenty of possible ghostly residents. 998 men are said to have died within its' walls.
